Railway Tracks

Ever Wonder why railway tracks are always covered with stones around? I also wonder the same thing so I went to find out and I found out that...

Rail tracks are normally laid on a bed of coarse stone chippings known as ballast, which combines resilience, some amount of flexibility, and good drainage.

It is used to distribute the load from the railroad ties, and also to keep down vegetation that might interfere with the track structure. This also serves to hold the track in place as the trains roll by.

Wow I did not knew that the stones around play such an important role... Alright I learn a new thing today...
